Replacing carpet with Tile?

We have a 2006 with 4 slides. We want to replace the carpeting on the main floor (not inside the slides) with snap-in tile (no tools or material needed). We were told by the mfg. that we couldn't do that, something about the slides needed carpet to come in on. Is there any truth to this? Has anybody changed to floor tile in front of the slides?

We got a good deal on the tiles and would like to put it down next week. It is simulated hardwood flooring, skid resistant. The carpeting is so worn and thin that the new tile would almost be the same thickness.

Thanks in advance.

How would the manufacturer know it's a problem? They only built the unit.

They do thorough testing and inspecting before they send out each and every unit. :W

Glad I wasn't drinking anything when I read this...

  • On our previous TT the slide would tilt in a bit and slide on the floor. When we replaced the carpet we just kept 4 squares of the old carpet to use as sliders. When we pulled the slide in we would put the 4 carpet pieces face down on the laminate at the point the slide tipped in. This allowed the slide to come in without damaging the flooring. It was a pain but worked for us. Good luck, John
  • Something to keep in mind is the carpet covers up a lot of gaps due to less than close measuring and cutting during assembly. Be ready for creative trim work.

  • I replace the carpet with laminate wood two years ago and I don't have any problem.
  • Thank you, everybody. I feel confident now and am going ahead and replacing the carpet with the laminate!!

I still want to know, tho, if any of you or anyone else, did the slides, too. Just curious. BJ

Carpet in the slides usually hides the rollers that would otherwise be exposed. Lift up the carpet flaps to view them. Carpet also makes the transition between the slight differences in floor height easier to manage regardless of carpet, linoleum or laminate flooring on the main surface.

Be sure to post some pics of your new floor.
  • Sorry I've taken so long to answer back. I WAS going to change over the carpet to the laminate but it will have to be postponed. My son had an abundance of the laminate and offered some of it to a home owner..they took it all. :-(
Now I will have to wait until next summer, as we're closing up the camper and heading south for the winter. Yep, we leave the fifth wheel in NY and go to our other "permanent" camper in Florida. We've been homebound long enough...the fw provided us a home in NY...but since it's setup permanent we'd be foolish to try and move it. (Our dreams of being fulltime travelers didn't work out.) But I will try to post pics when it gets done. Thank you, everybody, for all your help.
Stay safe...and warmmmmmm. See you next spring/summer!
  • It's too early to head to FLA.....be sure to get us those pics next year.
