Replacing carpet with Tile?

We have a 2006 with 4 slides. We want to replace the carpeting on the main floor (not inside the slides) with snap-in tile (no tools or material needed). We were told by the mfg. that we couldn't do that, something about the slides needed carpet to come in on. Is there any truth to this? Has anybody changed to floor tile in front of the slides?

We got a good deal on the tiles and would like to put it down next week. It is simulated hardwood flooring, skid resistant. The carpeting is so worn and thin that the new tile would almost be the same thickness.

Thanks in advance.

  • Does the slide leave deep marks in the carpet now? If so then it probably will rub on the new, taller flooring and damage it. First step of the project would be to adjust the slide so it doesn't rub - if possible.
I adjusted mine upward because it was wearing on the carpet. It took making adjustments and creating a roller system for the slide to move on. A lot of work but it works better than new. It would probably just clear and new snap-lock flooring if I installed it.
  • Wow, such a quick response...much appreciated. I'm encouraged!

Let me ask one more question: Did any of you change over to laminate flooring INSIDE the slideout, as well?

(by tile, I guess I meant laminate flooring..it isn't one piece lineoleum...it comes in strips approx. 8"x24", that snap together like tongue n groove)
  • some rv's have damaged the vinyl floors and need a plastic runner. So yes it can happen.

How would the manufacturer know it's a problem? They only built the unit.

They do thorough testing and inspecting before they send out each and every unit. :W
  • If by tile you mean laminate flooring, I did that with my trailer last year.....It works fine. Either the slide has a roller or is suspended above the flooring, so I cant see how that is a factor.
