Are residential refrigerators really designed to run in campers that bounce down the road for days at time? Are they designed for storage temperatures that can reach in excess of 100 degrees for months at a time.
Or are residential refrigerators designed for residences?
I see a lot fewer complaints about residential fridges than the Norcold and Dometic absorption fridges. I've had both Norcold and Dometic cooling units fail. Having had both types over the last 20+ years, I'll choose the residential fridge every time.
We have a Norge residential-type freezer that we bought back in 1976 when we lived in Ohio. That freezer has sat on an unheated side porch in Ohio until 1997, then in an uncooled garage in southeast Texas since. After 40 years, it's still going strong, so I'd say the compressor-type refrigerators and freezers are pretty darned temperature tolerant.

I don't know if they are designed for it or not but there is a lot manufacturers installing them and a lot of people converting from the propane jobs. They seem to be holding up well. We are in year 4 and we put on the miles.
