RETIREMENT

This is the year. At the end of this school year we'll retire. In September we'll head out on an extended trip; hopefully not returning to Minnesota until the snow melts in 2018.

The question: what are the things we ought to bring along that we aren't likely to be thinking about now? We haven't taken a long trip in our 5er before. We can plan for cooking supplies, clothes and such, but are there other things that are unique to such a trip?

  • Some ideas-100 ft. electrical cord. extra dump hoses that can connect to each other, a couple solar chargeable lights, extra fuses, electrical converter from 50 amp to 30 amp or visa/versa, of course DUCT tape, extra 20 ft and 10 ft water hoses, water pressure valve. maybe an extra umbilical cord for connect from RV. to truck(yup, had to replace mine on a trip in B.C.),etc. Lars
  • We didn't have many things we needed for a long trip that we didn't already have for a short trip. Some things we had to consider for our first long trip after retirement (three years ago):
    1. Mail delivery
    2. How to pay bills
    3. How to renew vehicle registrations
    4. Where to get medications on the road.
    5. What to do if you get sick on the road.

Think through all the scenarios that can occur and plan for them. Unfortunately, we were on a long trip this last summer when our truck caught on fire. The blaze spread to the fifth wheel and destroyed it too. We lost nearly Everything! Whether you're on a long trip or short trip, we found out it was a good idea to have a "bug out bag" that was easily accessible in an emergency. It should have your important papers, credit cards, jackets, laptop, phone chargers, etc. It would have made our life much easier if we'd had it. We've since replaced everything and we're better prepared for an emergency on the road now. Our motto is prepare for the worst and hope it never happens.

  • Stuff you'll need for filing your income tax, otherwise you may need to go home earlier than you'd like.
  • I have about a year before we can take that extended vacation. I wonder the same thing but realize that stores will not be too far away so I think we'll just take off.

Most important is a good bank with online services equipped with money!
  • Only you can decide what you need, and what you can do without. Some people don't use their indoor cooking facilities, some don't use their showers very much, some must have campfires and outdoor stuff, some hate the outdoor stuff and spend more time inside reading.

What you need to have along will depend on how you plan to spend your time. Outdoor activities? Swimming? Cycling? Rock climbing?

Obviously you need the basics: several lengths of drinking water hoses, perhaps an extension cord for shore power, extra gas cans for a generator if you take one, the various adapters for power pedestals, extra water filters if you use them, jacks to lift the trailer if the need arises, various tools depending on your level of expertise, etc.

You need to take a couple week trips to learn what you need and what you just want to take along, and trim the lists as you go.

Oh yeah, the important thing: money. :)
