Since you have it figured out now, here is a very quick, cheap and easy tip for those who remove their batteries for storage.
Wrap the cables in some if this.

Called "Convoluted Tubing". You can buy it at most auto parts stores and you can cut it as short as you like for your application. I would think the 3/8" ID to 1/2" ID would do. Do one wrap on the + side, and another wrap in the - side.
You can even get the stuff in colors to make sure you hook the cables up on the proper polarity.
One thing for sure. It'll help prevent "dropping wires" if used properly.
