Polarity reversed?

I have two 30 amp outlets, one on each end of my house for RVs.
When I connect to the outlet on the west side of the house my batteries drain, both house and chassis. Other eend of the house works fine, batteries charge right up.

Could it be that the west outlet is wired wrong? Maybe I can just reverse the connections?

I have a theory or three

1: Circuit breaker (inside coach)Feeding converter triped
2: Screw loose,,,(Same breaker,,Or the assoicated white wire)
    3: Blown fuse/tripped breaker,,,Converter output
    4: Converter = Toast
and on some rigs...Mine included... 5: Converter plug came out of socket
(One of my convereters (I have 2 in parallel) The ORIGINAL one...Is a plug in model..The other one is normally disabled.. But from time to time #5 happens... When that happens I turn on the aux converter... (I usually figure it out around 3 AM so I'm not going out to plug back in)
  • Thanks so much for the help all. Checked wiring, OK. Checked for power, OK.

Will get a 30 to 15 puck and check it that way.

I do not have a surge protector at this time.
  • Is the outlet that drains the battery (I agree, not possible) actually a live outlet? It may not be actually providing AC power?????
  • To answer your question, even if one of those outlets had the hot and common reversed it would not cause your batteries to go dead.
  • Blown breaker? (eg.. no power). I've never heard of an outlet 'draining' batteries.

Here is another Pictorial I like to use on using a multimeter to confirm the proper AC VOLTAGES for the RV 30AMP Receptacle.

If you DO NOT get these readings then something is wrong...

Do you have a SURGE GUARD? IF so then one outlet may be wired wrong (240volt) and the surge guard is working as designed and not passing power to the RV...If this is the case write a very nice letter to the company that made it thanking them

(Measure the voltage flat slot to flat slot, carefully)

I will describe testing even better in a moment

OR, it might not be connected at all (or breaker Tripped)

    Easy test

    You need

15 to 30 amp PUCK type adapter (Dogbone/Pigtail type OK but more expensive)

    Three Light Outlet tester

    Plug in Volt meter.

Use the adapter to make your 30 into a 20

VOlt meter will check voltage...Most plug in models can take 240 for a short time (Will pin the meter though)

TLT will tell you if it is wired properly.

Finally.. Reverse Polarity on that plug will NOT discharge your batteries...UNLESS a Surge Guard detects and objects to it.

Then the batteries run down as though you were NOT PLUGGED IN.
