Previous owner probably left one of those little mechanical beepers, or ringers that make an instantaneously beep or chirp randomly. Sometimes people use these for office jokes. They put the little gizmo behind a cabinet, or a clock hanging on the wall, or under a desk. It makes a random chirp, only once or twice. It drives everyone nuts once it gets their attention trying to figure out what the source is. In an office setting, the jokester will occasionally move it around the office, making it even harder to find, if not impossible. Before you know it, you have everyone in the office going nuts. It's cruel, but it's also funny!
