The most tenacious stuff for this type of application is Dry Moly Lube (molybdenum disulfide)in a spray can. Its a bit expensive ($15 for 11 oz)but the stuff is tough (outlasts graphite easily), is waterproof, doesnt come off, (don't get it on you) and is heat resistant. It will also resist abrasion and prevent future rusting. It is widely used in gunsmithing to re-blue weapons and also to lubricate wood stoves.
