RV Crushes Truck

His problem was the secondary step of moving the handle pin. since he didn't move the handle pin it allowed the jaws to come open.

Wrong there was a gap at the drivers side. Look again.

Every high pin I've seen with rv and non rv trailers and 5th wheel hitches looked just like this. There was no big gap all around but one side or the other or to the rear of the hitch plates.

IMO the guy in the you tube may never know what his exact scenario was that lead to his dropped trailer. But he may have a couple of good guesses which will lead him to better hookup procedures.

Those that think their brand of hitch or jaw type can't be high pinned....high hooked....high hitched or whatever term you use are just fooling themselves ...which makes for good joking over on haulers forums where those folks that use products/equipment daily know better.

CDL driving 'one o one', take a flashlight and visually check to see if the king pin is captured. Jaws or bar must be around or behind the pin. Last but not least -- read the instructions for the hitch your are using.

He was hitched the same both times , there was no high hitch. He flat didn't close the handle. I looked at what you are referring to several times , and I disagree.

Do this ,you asked me to look I did, now you go back look at the first video ,and tell me the handle was closed. Now look at the second video , and tell me it was not closed . Also go back to the first part of the first video when they were messing with the handle ,and the older guy actually put the handle in the closed position once, and you can clearly see it, so as a reference look at where the handle position is when he dropped the fifth wheel, clearly not closed.

We can be wrong here, I have no problem if I am , but I honestly I don't see high hitching. But there is no mistake on those handle positions, and he DID NOT have the handle closed when he dropped that fifth wheel . Hopefully you will look at the handle positions, and then get back , and let us know what you see.

You have to reverse a bit to take the pressure off the jaws and only then you won't have to fight to unlock it, the hitch was never locked properly in the first place if you look at the white pin when he hooked up the second time and the extra nylon plate was not needed, Trucked for 50 yrs and pulled the odd fw pin in that time and it was the same, you have to take the pressure off to unhook.Lucky that was all the damage, could have lossed it on the street.
