Have half tons now switched over to the full-floating rear axle design used in the 3/4 and 1 tons, or do they still use semi-floating rear axles where the weight applied to the rear axle is carried by the axle shafts?

Both Chevy and Ram did this for a while in the early to mid 2000's, more or less fake 1/2 tons 1500 with 6,084# rear axles. None now days.
With those exceptions even modern 150/1500's may have the payload, but not the strength of 250/2500 even 25 years ago.
Even back in 79, my F250 had large four piston front disk brakes and huge rear drums.
Yes, it ONLY had an 8,000# GVWR, and that 460 was rated at about 235 HP. Yep a modern 150/1500 will likely pull better, but I would still rather have the full Floating 6,084# axle under me than even a 7 lug 4,800# rear axle.
Even my 14 year old 2500, will do fine, and I would much rather have the spare capacity that I have over the 8,800# GVWR.
The axles rate at 5,200# and 6,084# for a total of 11,284#.
The tires optional OEM 265/75-16 E's 3,415# ea. total 13,660#.
