I can see comparing todays HD 1/2 tons to 3/4 tons of 25 years ago. But I was under the assumption we were comparing apples to apples. Todays 1/2 tons are not todays 3/4 tons.
A properly optioned 2015 F150 has higher capacity that some 2015 3/4 ton trucks on the road.
A 2015 Ford f150 Crew cab 4x4 with Eco Boost V6 , 6'4" box and payload package is rated for 2650lbs payload.

A 2015 Ram 2500 Crew Cab with 6'4" box and Cummins diesel is rated for 2360lbs

The Ram does have a much higher tow rating and will pull the trailer better but if you pull a 13-15k 5th wheel then the 2500 might be overweight.
There are certainly some 5th wheels that are definitely half ton towable depending on the half ton and the options.
The F150 pulling any Eagle HT will be legal and most Ram 1500's with 3.92 axle ratio will also legally pull most of the Eagles.
