Sad day, we have to sell! Advice

Due to an unfortunate turn of events with my DW health we have to put up the truck and camper. The entire family is sad about this decision, but sometimes "reality" smacks you right in the face! Should we attempt to sell as a package or individually? What about consignment at a dealer? How do you know what a fair asking price is? Everyone's comments appreciated! Thank you
  • We had no luck trying to sell our 2500 HD and Triple E fiver as a unit not one person showed interest. Finally got lucky with a response on the truck (I had it in local papers and local radio station) and got a good price for it.
The trailer finally sold for about what the NADA had it listed in their "high" column.
I did spend a week on it stem to stern...shampooed carpets twice full wax job etc. it looked fantastic.
One thing that we are lucky to have here is a local RV service place who let you park it on consignment and they keep the keys and show when needed and they do it for a very reasonable price. Lots more interest there and you don't have to put up with the "lookie lous" :)
Sorry about your problems hope you can get back into it in future.
    Good luck!
  • I would sell separately.
Ive sold many campers and cars on craigs list without any problems what so ever.
Yes there are scammers on there but its very easy to recognize when you receive the email.
Very simple, sell for cash only.Do not agree to ship via a shipping company and anything to do with western union is a red flag.Cash only, cash, cash, cash.May take some time but it only takes one person to buy so have patience.Dont be alone when anyone comes to look. Most people are honest.Clean it to look spotless. If you find somewhere to do consignment you are going to take a huge hit over selling outright.Up to you how fast you need to sell.Either way you are going to take a hefty hit.Camper resale is worse then cars.Good luck!
  • Last year we listed our 5th wheel first, on Craigslist. We waited the whole 3 weeks until it sold, and then listed the truck. The idea we had behind keeping the truck was, if someone needed the 5r delivered, we could do it.
I am not sure how many people are interested in purchasing a combo. You could try posting it on escapees I suppose.
If you have a dealership by you, wouldn't hurt to ask how much they will give you for them individually.
Some consignment places are ok, since a lot of people need to finance. Call and ask what they charge.
As someone stated, look on RVT and RV Trader and see what private parties are asking near your area for similar set ups. Dont go by dealer price.
We have sold many, many large ticket items on Craigs List, and have yet to have any problems. Scams are very obvious.
Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Best of luck to both of you, and I hope your wife gets better.
  • Hope you had many wonderful trips and carry great memories from your trips.
  • Sorry to hear about your situation.
We just sold our 5th wheel that was 13 years old by putting it on Craigslist. Sold in 10 days. However I think we sold it a little too cheap because it was in excellent shape. I determined my asking price by checking similar size 5th wheels about the same age for sale around my area.
    Good luck.

you cannot base your price on asking prices in newspaper/craig's list ads. they do not represent prices actually obtained.

  • We sold our last trailer on consignment at a dealer.

I did not wish to deal with Craigslist and meeting people to show the traailer.

The dealership sold my trailer in 1 week for more than I was planning to ask.
  • Sorry to hear about your wife. I'm in the same boat. Have priced mine out both
ways, single and together. My heart is not in selling, but very expense yard
    ornaments if not being used.
