sealing window question

My brother has a 2008 Denali that had a leaking window. He took the window out to re-seal it and pulled out a type of foam seal. He says there were no other seal used. I have always seen a butyl tape around the frame of the window and caulking around the exterior edge of the frame.

He needs to install his window before the rain gets here so I'm seeking the advice of anyone who has done this type of repair before.

What does he need to do to ensure a leak free Windom. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
  • I redid my door window with butyl tape and it sealed it great. I plan to do the rest of the windows this summer
  • I've resealed my windows with putty tape instead of butyl tape. Good luck, John
  • As you surmise, butyl tape is usually employed. I would get a fresh roll and rework every window or door that isn't installed correctly.
Otherwise he may be looking at rot issues around other openings.
