We know that sometime in 2014 we will be upgrading to a newer Voltage. We are looking forward to seeing the Voltage 3970 in person as this is the one the wife has her eye on.A few months ago, we got a wild hair and decided to look into an upgrade by trading in our Voltage 3200 to the dealer for a new Voltage 3990. We ended up backing out of the deal because I felt we weren't getting enough for our trade and it just wasn't worth taking the hit.My questions are for those who may have attempted a trade and decided to sell privately through other sources. First, which private method did you use? Seems RV trader and Craigslist are popular. Second, were you successful in selling it privately? And finally, was the amount you sold it for sold privately (vs. what a dealer may have offered) worth the hassle of dealing with showing it to people, etc.I am in no real rush to sell so I've considered putting out there just to see what kind of interest I get. If it were to sell then great.

It was successful for me because my RV sold itself (Craigslist). If your rig is super clean and well maintained, just post a lot of pictures so any potential buyers can evaluate it online first. I only had 2 people look at my TT before the 2nd guy bought it. He told me that the pics helped but my TT was the cleanest out there. He knew what he wanted and had a 5th wheel prior so knew he what to look for. He went on the roof and saw fresh sealant, opened the water heater door and saw it was clean. Make your rig cleaner than the others and at a reasonable price (less than others online but more than trade in value) and you should be able to sell it fairly quick. Good luck

I have sold 2, one I did look at trading in and got almost double what the dealer offered, as did a friend of mine. Not saying you will do the same but I sold both to the first people to look at them. Trying to sell the class A right now, totally different market, and it is somewhat of a hassle but still should get $20k over what the dealer is willing to give. I used CL on the two THs and CL and RVTrader on the RV.

We are trading our Voltage 3950 2013 for the new 3970 waiting for slide covers to be installed can't wait.Talk about a hit, well you know its just money can't wait got to do it now.Had a hard time finding anything about this 3970 but got it right before new years.RV of Ga. got it for me. I will post some pics as soon as we get it.

Usually you are always better of selling it on your own then trading it in. Dealer is going to make money on both of them or they won't do the trade, so some place in that mix you are either losing equity or rolling negative equity over to new RV. However, if sales tax is in the mix then sometimes it can make sense to trade if you get a decent deal. It's all a numbers game, if you understand it you won't get taken (as bad).

I tried to trade mine in and the sales lady told me to sell it out right after they gave me a offer.Sold it on CL for alot more..

We have gone both routes- trading in to a dealer and selling/buying privately. The last time we sold our travel trailer on Craigs List and found a 5th wheel on RV Trader. I think we made out very good price wise but it took several months and a lot of patience to go pull it off. We lost most of one camping season making the switch. Going through a dealer makes things happen much faster.... at a price.

Have you checked with the dealer(s) to see what they will give you. When I had just purchased my 06 raptor the dealer was willing to let us trade it in for next years model (w/rear bunks) for $4k difference. I didn't and really wished I would have later on. At that price difference to me it would have been worth it. I agree thought lost of the times you get more selling it out right.

I traded my Hobbi, as the dealer I finally went with gave me right about what I saw them selling for on Craigslist/RV Trader. But then again, the Hobbi is a lower end model. My buddy recently sold his Jayco Jayflight on CL, and he sold it for what he was asking within two days of posting it. So, I guess it depneds on what you have and what people are looking for.

CL and RV TRader are free. Post is up there for a ton of money and see what happens...if someone buys it, go get the new one!!

I'm hoping to see the new Voltage (among other things) at the RV show tomorrow here in SA...

That was kind of my thought. While I am not familiar with the cost of the units discussed. Sounds like the dealer was $13K away when the OP talked. I don't think you'll do too much better via a private sale once all is said and done.
A one year old financed unit will cost close to the the price of a new unit. There is not a lot of incentive/savings for a buyer to purchase a 1 year old model vs. a new model.

In some states you only pay sales tax based upon the difference between what you trade and what you buy. Bigger the numbers the bigger the savings. We traded our TT in at La Mesa RV as they were willing to give me full price for it based upon what I would have received from a consignment sale down the street. This saved me almost $700 in sales tax (not paid), and I netted more than than I would have from the consignment sale.

I usually sell on CL and have had good luck doing so but LMRV had exactly what I wanted and it was easier to let them do the paperwork when they came up to full price for the TT trade in. Also in some states (Arizona is one), there is no sales tax on private party sales which can be a big incentive for your buyer.
