Severe sway

Hi everyone yesterday my wife and I took the plunge and purchased an older WW Toy Hauler. We loaded up our Rhino in the back and hit the road for home, it was an 80 mile trip mostly interstate. As soon as we got on the interstate the horror began. I got up the top speed I will tow a TT, 65mph. The trailer started swaying so violently I s!@#$ my pants and literally had to pull over and stop.

I have never ever experienced such a tremendous violent sway. The problem was defiantly because of the Rhino in the rear making the back end of the trailer too heavy. I had to get that thing out of the trailer and put it back in the pick-up bed. With the Rhino in the pick-up the trailer never swayed even the slightest. I even hit 70 briefly a couple times coming down hill.

My question is is there any remedy for the sway??? I am still 800lbs under the GVWR with the Rhino in the back. I cant be the only one to have this problem with a toy hauler. The only reason we got the toy hauler was to get the freaking Rhino out of the truck. Thank You for the help

  • Most trailer tires are not rated for over 65 mph. I've found (in thousands of miles of towing) that 60 mph is comfortable speed if that is not above the speed limit.

Your sway was from being rear-heavy/tongue light, and pushing the speed. First of all you need some serious weight on the front end of the RV. Then you need a really good hitch. Then you need to slow down.

Only 1 time I had sway, and that was with my pop-up when we put bicycles on the rear bumper. Swayed like it was going to flip over. Only solution was to add more weigh to the front, or drive slower so it would not sway.

Since we couldn't add more weight to the front, we had to drive slower.

You may bite my head off when I say this, but 70 mph is just too fast for towing a trailer. You REALLY need to slow down.

70 is not too fast for towing, at all.
  • What hitch? What sway control? Really sounds like you need more weight in the front.
  • What's a Rhino?
