Short Bed Dually

I have a 2012 Dodge Mega Cab Dually with a short box. I have been told that I will have to have a special spendy hitch installed. Is this the case. I am purchasing a 2009 Cyclone 3912. Will this truck work. This TH is 41'. Rookie.

  • I use my manuel slider every time I use my trailer. Why not have it in case you need it? Lot easier then needing it and not having it.
  • I was told I "needed" a slider hitch when I bought my first fifth wheel. I has a SRW short box. NEVER once in the 9 years of owning it did I ever actually use the slider feature. Never saw a need to. I could not turn full 90 degrees...but never found myself in a position of needing to. Complete waste of money in my opinion.
  • I have a 2010 mega cab with a Dutchmen Voltage. I have a B&W Companion (non-slider) and the front cap doesn't get that close to my cab. It works fine.
  • Cyclone trailers have a rounded front cap and extended pin-box designed to work with short-beds. That said, you still will contact the cab window if you try to make a full 90 degree turn, such as when back into a campsite. Cost of a manual slider vs a fixed hitch is probably less than a window replacement. But if you forget to slide-it, you still might be buying a window anyways, and after a few windows you'll be out more than an auto-slider hitch. Also, if you have the powered rear window, it's $$$ if it breaks. You cannot just buy one glass pane. They replace the full window assembly.
  • yes, you will need a slider, as for "spendy" it depends, a manual slider is that much more than a non-slider. Where as an auto slider is a bit pricey.

This is ultimately determined by where the hitch has to go in the bed and how far it is from the cab. Further factor in the shape of the 5er front cap. The more rounded the better clearance in turns. Also the pinbox style standard or extended matters.

Might get better advice on this in the 5er section.
