Short bed or long bed?

I'm looking at a 2014 Dodge Ram 3500 non dully with a 6.4 ft bed to tow a 2013 5th wheel Keystone cougar 327 RES.

Do I need the long bed? What do I loose if I have the short bed?

My previous experience was with a TT and a 5th wheel is a new world for me.
  • Are you going to use the truck for anything more than an rv puller? For any distance?
Many long bed rigs have a drop in fuel tank to increase range between fueling. Fill up at the lowest price, go a 1000 mi. to next fueling.
No need for a sliding hitch. The genny, pin mounted bike rack, all your stuff can fit in a long bed. What about resale value? The market here is poor for short tbeds.
The turning radius for short beds is minimal comparative to long. Cost of a sliding hitch and less bed capacity should also figure into your decision.
A short bed is right for many people. Look beyond the aesthetics, to choose what is right for you.

  • Del, this is a long bed site or else the long bedders are the most boisterous. :h

I been towing with a short bed for right at 20 years now with nary a problem.

I think that after reading all the long bed talk you will be a strong willed dude if you don't cave to peer pressure. :B
  • How many long bed trucks have you seen w/dinged cabs hauling a 5ver?
How many short bed trucks have you seen w/dinged cabs hauling a 5ver?

After seeing several at Quartzsite this year I started taking pictures of them for my brother who keeps thinking about a short bed when he buys a new truck.

  • What does that entail from a driving perspective? Do I have to do anything? Can I still turn as tight?
