Chevy and GMC trucks come in long, standard or short beds. I would have liked the long bed but I wanted to be able to park in the garage, so I went with the standard bed. I have had no reason to have needed the long bed for towing the FW so far.
One nice side benefit of the standard bed is I can hitch with my tailgate down and not have it hit the trailer. My buddy has my same truck with a long bed and he has to shut the tailgate once the pinbox gets inside the truck bed or else it will hit the trailer when he hitches up.
Might be his pin box length. I have a long bed with the Lippert 1716 pin box and have no problem opening and closing my tailgate with the 5'er hitched up. If his pin box is on the short side then that could be his problem.
