I suspect the burner jet was the culprit... The electrode was doing its job... Ignition - but you were having difficulty maintaining the flame after ignition. Bet the sewing needle cleaned the orifice... Just hope it isn't too big now. May burn rich- look for black soot on the exit vent. If so you should replace the orifice.
