Skylight repair questions

Hello! I am new on the forums, and this is my first post. I'll try to be brief.

Thanks to the rain that blew in ala the hurricane in Mexico, I now have discovered that I have 4 skylights that need replacing. (Nothing like waking up to water on the floor right?)

I watched a youtube video on how to do the job and it seems easy enough. However, the video showed using screws. I noticed on my roof that they used rivets. My question is, can I use self tapping/sealing screws, or should I use pop rivets?

Thanks for any feedback.

OP, did you ever get this Skylight issue fixed?

When I looked at this thread, it seemed to me that you needed to replace Vent Covers. In the first picture above, the Vent Cover is the open "Lid", hinged at the right in the photo. They're easy to replace. Disconnect the arm that lifts them when you turn the crank. Open the Lid till it's over backwards. Then something has to be loosened, removed, straightened, to let you slide the cover out of its track to one side or the other, then slide the replacement in. Then tighten, replace, bend back, whatever retains the lid.

I can't be more specific because there are about three versions of the Lid. Camping World has pictures of the types so you can figure it out from there.

The standard ones are inexpensive, less than $20, and there are Lexan ones that might be say $30. Worth it in the Southern Sun. So is putting Vent Covers over the whole assemblies. They protect the Lid and also allow you to have it open in the rain. I have them on all three of our vents. They look sorta like an A/C shroud, and I know you know what those look like. MaXXair is a popular brand, but Camco and others offer them as well.

  • This is a vent.

this is a skylight, both are sealed and screwed on.

Moderator edit to re-size picture to forum recommended limit of 640px maximum width.

4 skylights and no vents? :h That makes little sense, as does affixing either a skylight or vent flange to the roof with rivets instead of screws. :h The conventional method is to put down a layer of butyl tape on the flange which will create a tight seal when the flange is screwed down. Add self leveling lap sealant to each screw head, a generous bead around the flange edge, and in combination with the butyl under the flange there's no way that skylight or vent should leak.
  • I've never replaced one but once skylight is replaced they add Dicor around the edges to seal. I wouldn't think it would matter. Obviously if all of yours were blowing off the rivets weren't holding.
