Slide problem

We are having a problem with our bedroom slide on our 2006 KZ Escalade. When the slide is closed, it is down about 1/4" on the outside. We took it into the local RV shop and they said the problem is that the bottom/floor of the side, on the outside, is soft and has a crack and therefore is not supporting the slide brace when closed. They want to remove the whole slide, rebuild the bottom of the slide replace it for about $3k. I am looking for an alternative to fix this myself.

I was thinking that a sheet of aluminum could be placed over the soft spot/crack, to sure it up. My concern is that this will make a small lip or ridge that the slide wheel will have to roll over to close the slide. I thought about trying this from the inside, but I have opened up the inside under the bed and floor is raised -meaning there must be a top plywood sheet an air pocket, and then the bottom sheet. There is also metal braces and components to sure up the "box".

Thoughts or comments?

Thanks!

  • Just based on the description and picture I'd be leery of of adding anything to the bottom. Someone might have a better idea but I'd be inclined to get it fixed correctly. As the slide collapses further more damage will occur at the opening.
  • I suggest you contact Marty Yoder, service manager at the KZ factory repair center. It will be done properly and at a fair price. Marty..800-768-4016 ext 145
  • I doubt that a sheet of aluminum would be strong enough in itself to shore it up. If it cracked, the support structure of the floor is inadequate. Also as you said, it must be smooth where the rollers travel over for it to work right.
