Slideout kitchens?

For starters, I really LOVE the Laredo 28re floorplan we have at the moment; and it's giving us no problems. BUT - it's 11 years old; and since we're a car dealer, once in a while a repo RV goes through the auction. I've been studying newer models, so that IF one showed up and Ed called me and asked if he should bid - I want to be able to make a slightly-educated guess...LOL!!

It seems like the majority of newer 5ers (we're mostly interested in 28 to 32'), offer part or all of the kitchen as a slide-out. My purely gut reaction to that is "one shouldn't put gas, water, drain, and electrical lines in something that is moving in and out"??? I've read posts about pinched drains and worn gas lines... but I realize we generally hear about the problems, and there could be thousands of RVs with kitchen slideouts having no problems.

Are my concerns senseless?

  • Stove, fridge, cabinets, and entertainment center in a long slide and never had a problem. It IS heavy, but everything works OK.
  • I don't think that you are going to find many with drains in the slide-out. Anything else is really not a problem....
  • Anything that moves can fail.

My bigger concern......can I use the kitchen with the slide IN
  • Is there an opportunity to inspect a unit that is in the auction before bidding? I know my husband said, "No kitchen slide out"....and guess what we have??? LOL! Only the sink & cooktop/oven slide, the fridge does not. When we found this unit and he was able to look underneath and see how it all worked, he had no problems with it and we've not had any problems! IF he can inspect before bidding, I think that would be a good start.
  • Deb. wouldn't worry about it. We have never had any trouble with the rigs we have had with partial kitchen in the slide. The one I have now we are starting year 6 with fridge and stove in the slide and no problems. I believe they have flex lines to the things in a slide. Good Luck.
  • We love ours and have never had an issue. On ours, the fridge and stove/oven slide out. I check routinely for wear on the moving gas and electrical systems...but so far no wories.
  • Only one problem with mine since I started fulltiming in '06. The wire loom that held the electric wires rubbed against a tire and had to be spliced to get 12v back to the frig.

FWIW, you'd probably be worried about any 5er since a tire blowout (not uncommon) could take out a propane line.
  • No problems with mine yet, have the fridge and stove in the slideout. I did look under and there are hinged brackets that the gas line is in that allows it to go out with the slide and fold out of the way when it comes in.
