Small Toy Hauler - East Coast

I want to move up from my pop up to a small toy hauler for my motorcycle (Honda 1800 VTX), girlfriend, and a kayak (or 2). I need a Queen bed and inside plumbing (or I won't be allowed to buy it) and maybe beds for a grand kid or 2 from time to time. I have enough truck to tow it but I really want to stay small if I can (25' or less). I am interested in a quality build, durability and low maintenance. I live in Florida but travel all over east of the Mississippi (mostly Southeast) so a good AC is more important to me than a good heater. I will use it monthly and it will be kept mostly outdoors. I would appreciate any recommendations you can give me.
  • I suspect your girlfriend is going to be very unhappy when she finds out you're planning on towing her in the toy hauler... ;)
  • I've been absolutely thrilled with my Forest River Shockwave. With the bike (also VTX1800T) I wish I had a few more feet. The bike just comes in to the 'living' area even with it against the back wall. 2 more feet would make all the difference in my trailer. But, I do not have a queen sized bed, and my model doesn't have the drop beds in the rear (only fold down couches that make 2 singles). With just a dirt bike there is plenty of room, both bikes and the rear end is too crowded to get the the cabinets at the back.

My trailer is 5yrs old now. I lived in it on weekdays for 26mo straight for working away from home, plus multiple month long trips for work, plus the family camping. The only failure I've had is the fuel pump for the toy tank quit working and I know it is a motor/pump failure. The fridge/wh have burned many gallons of propane without complaint. All the interior stuff has been perfect, no issues with drawers or doors, faucets or cabinets.

My trailer has gotten a lot of living use, not too many miles though. Check them out and see if they have a floorplan that fits your needs.
  • I like my 2010 Cruiser RV Funfinder Xtra XT-245. I had to be careful not to overload an F150 with 1600 lb. payload. I waited 53 weeks for a clean used one to come available near my home. If weight is not an issue, there are many new toy haulers available. I have heard good things about the Evergreen and Forest River Work and Play lines, but they were all too heavy for my truck.

Quality, durability and low maintenance is hard to find in a toy hauler travel trailer. I was advised to avoid the corrugated aluminum siding because it is more difficult to clean. I do like the ducted AC in mine. The front bed is a "short queen" but could be adapted to a full length queen mattress with a little carpentry work. I did have to fix a light switch that was wired incorrectly when it was built. It was 4 years old when I got it and I did have to get a leak fixed. It had been stored inside so there wasn't any damage. The better RV repair shops now have a method to pressurize the interior and spray the exterior with soapy water to find air leaks. I think if I ever buy another one, new or used, I will get the leak test done.
