smoke alarm

turned on heater in brand new 5th wheel last night camping and the smoke alarm off in ceiling of stairs, turned on fantastic fan and it quit, gave it a minute then turned the heater back on and same thing, cant see smoke but smells like its new.

what say you folks, is this normal...never had this in travel trailer
  • It's normal for new heating equipment to 'burn off' coatings.
I just open some Windows and turn on the heat until the smell is gone.
If the smell doesn't stop, start investigating.
  • It stated exactly what you said. Takes 5 to 10 minutes to burn paint off. all is well.

    and thanks,

  • Same thing in our stick house each fall. Have to burn off dust and other ****, then no more smell. RV same way. We cheat. We use a couple small electric space heaters. They do a wonderful job in keeping coach pretty comfy. As a back up, we uncover the floor vents and switch t-stat to heat just in case it gets too cold and lil heaters can't keep up, but this has rarely happened.
  • Same thing for us a few weeks back on our new rig. Took the battery out and kept running the furnace, a few hours later the battery went back in and no problems since.
  • Side note about smoke alarms. Read one time in Reader's Digest about a lady who wondered why her family didn't make tracks to exit the house when the smoke alarm went off. She asked her son and he said, "Dinners done".
