So, the equalizer that evens out the suspension keeps the axle with the flat off the ground transferring the whole load to the other tire? I don't think so. If a tire goes flat on my trailer, the rim is still running on the ground, carrying weight. I'd have no problem running the old tire if I lost one on the other axle.

Good point.
In my former line of work I've had more tire issues than a couple of dozen average RV owners. I've had tires go down or blow out at nite. Never knew anything was wrong till the tire that was flat shredded itself to nothing and later at some point the steel wheel starts to run on pavement creating a beautiful spark show while carrying most of its share of the load.
Now I have had damage (cuts/bruses) on the tire behind the tire that shredded itself which wasn't a issue until tires came with steel tread belts.
