JT Strong Arms or BAL? Any difference? Seems both work. Do locking nuts have to be tighten for travel or are they captured in the loose position? BAL looks to use a tool I already have to tighten bars...

I have the JTs. They are pretty heavy duty and well made. From pictures they look to be a bit heavier grade than the Bals. I always tighten the handles when travelling. Partly out of fear of them falling out but more to stop anything from rattling.
I haven't tried but I imagine you could replace the handles with a bolt of the same thread if you'd prefer to use a tool to tighten. My handles only take a 1/2 turn to tighten and don't need a lot of force so I never felt the need for tools.
