Stained glass window install ???

We bought a stained glass window for the 5er door but have no instructions on how to install it. Can someone give me an idea of how to do this. Thanks
  • No information on how to install, but something you REALLY need to think about. My wife does stained glass for a hobby.

First, stained glass is not safety glass. The glass installed on your camper is safety glass. If it get's broken it will crumble into a bunch of non-sharp pebbles. Stained glass is just straight glass. If it breaks, it will leave shards, jagged edges, pointed knife shaped pieces, and lots of minuscule glass shards everywhere. Very dangerous, even small pieces of glass or small windows.

Second. I am assuming you are installing a single sheet of stained glass, not glass that is leaded together with different shapes and sizes. If your glass is held with joints because it makes a design or pattern, you might want to rethink installing in something that bounces, and flexes, and vibrates, and has motion. Those joints WILL weaken with movement. Once they weaken, like any wire that gets bent repeatedly over and over, the joints break, the glass can fall out and there goes your pretty window. If you are using a solid sheet, you won't have this problem, but #1 above is a real problem.

Third, Stained glass is very thin and has zero insulation value. If you camp in cold weather, you may be re-installing your original window.

Fourth, Stained glass is very brittle. A tiny rock flying from an oncoming vehicle can very easily break it. Safety glass currently installed in your camper is designed to take a much harder blow and still not hurt it.

But ..... you know .... it's your camper and you can do whatever you want. Good luck.

Personally, I'd keep the original window and just a sticker decal over it that looks like stained glass.

One more thing I just though of.... if your window is jointed with led and has many pieces, the weight of the glass itself wears on the lead. Over time, the lead gives way and the glass panes begin to sag because the led is giving way. The heat, cold, and constant movement of the camper on the road will also aid in weakening the leaded joints. This also leads to another problem. Unless the window (that has multiple pieces of glass in it) is not weather tight between each joint, it will leak. There is a special process that has to be done to weather tight each joint between each piece of glass. If not done, it's not weather tight. If using a single sheet of glass, you won't have that problem.

    What kind of door?
The DW wanted a window that opened, so we bought one of these

If yours is similar, it's a two person job, one inside, one out. The inside removes the screws from the bezel and the outside catches the window

I did find a video over at Camping World (when looking for the above) that might help

    Video is perfect, Thanks
  • This is the main door that you walk in and out of, window is approx. 12" wide by 21" high. Stained glass is the same size as the old glass. There are screws on the inside bezel, I know how to take it apart, I just want to know how to seal the glass so I doesn't leak. Thanks
  • If your stained glass us same size as the old glass, it's pretty easy. I replaced our door glass with a clear, bronzed safety glass. My plastic glass frame was removed by taking out the screws. The frame is two pieces, inside and outside, sealed with putty tape. The putty may hold the frames together, but push and it will release. Remove the old glass and place the new in the inside frame and put on new putty tape to seal. Put in door and the other frame half. Replace screws and enjoy your new window.

  • I think we need some more info. Is this window intended to replace one of the existing windows?
