Many people do not know how to use a torque wrench properly. The proper way is to use the torque wrench as the last tightening tool. In other words use your regular wrench to snug up the nuts/bolts and then do the final tightening with the torque wrench. A lot of mechanics will use an air wrench to tighten and then use a torque wrench and if it clicks they think they have reached they proper torque when in fact the air wrench has already overtightened the nuts/bolts. So when using a torque wrench, make sure the nut/bolt is turning as you make the final tightening and then you will have the proper torque as you have set in the wrench.
My daughter brought over her Ford 500 car to have me check her disk brake pads as the garage had told her they needed replacing when they repaired a flat tire. I couldn't believe the tightness of the lug nuts. I got out my torque wrench and had to set the torque at 165 ft.lbs. to move one of the lug nuts, not loosen just to see where it would tighten up some more. Unbelievable!! I had to use a 24" breaker bar to get them loose. I can't imagine what would have happened out on the road.
Oh yeah, her pads were fine.
