I have a small wire brush with a plastic handle that I scrape and swirl around in it when I pull my anode rod to drain or winterize. Then a quicky flush with the hose in the hole until it pours out some, in case any debris fell in the tank.
Add some new teflin tape and put it back in. Be careful not to cross thread or over tighten. Should be nice and snug. You don't need to "kill" it on.
