How many of you use the surge protectors .And how many time you wish to have one when the problem occur.

  • I have a hardwired 30amp surge guard. First thing I bought after the trailer. Been at a campground with power blinks. I consider it a must have

    Emphatic X2~!
  • With all the new electronics I went with the Progressive Dynamics 50A built in for the first time in any trailer. More than once it has shut us down because of issues with the incoming line.
  • I checked the list of Survey Questions that Chuck Woodbury assembled and could not find the answer but I would guess it's less than 10%. The newer more expensive rigs may have them built in.
We have one but tend to be on the conservative side (not politically) in that we carry two fire extinguishers, XPS Rib tires and two mounted XPS Rib spare tires.
  • We have FTed for the last 7 years, are moving all the time, and wouldn't want to be without one. Just way too many times that we have found problems in a pedestal that we would not have been aware of without the protector.

I think if you are only out for a couple of weeks a year, or always go back to the same places when your out, your probably at much less risk.

Interesting enough, while we have been in a couple of parks where spiking was a problem, low voltage is a much more common issue that we have run into. And while most of the low voltage will not cause an immediate problem, it apparently can be a real "appliance killer" over time.
  • I have the Progressive HW50C. Just this last April in the Florida Panhandle during the 22 inches of rain and hours of thunder and lightning, I think it saved us once. Electric went off then surged back on and exceeded 132 volts, the Progressive shut the power off. When I read the error code it indicated excess voltage. No breakers tripped, all was well when the Progressive allowed power back through a couple of minutes later. Other campers indicated that they had breakers trip.

We camp at many older COE parks where the electric system is 40+ years old in some cases. In mid summer when it is above 90 degrees and the park is full of big rigs all with two AC's the voltage can drop past 104 volts. This can damage your compressors. Our Progressive shut us down once last year and we had to move to another area of the park that was on a different leg and fewer campers. Had 110 to 117 volts the rest of the time and the Progressive liked that.

Wouldn't leave home without my Progressive EMS.
