It would be interesting if you ask them for their reasons. I would agree they think (falsely) they are saving fuel.

Or maybe they own an RV repair business and need work?

I am sure it is the misconception of saving fuel.
Mine will definitely hit. I can't even lower my tailgate if I am at too much of an angle.

I did leave mine down once by mistake while manuevering. It hits :( ( old rig )

Well I have never seen a study done on gate up/gate down/louvered gate with 5er in tow so they just might be saving.
Mythbusters did their test with an empty truck, do you not think having that 7' tall 8' wide box sitting over the TV bed make a slight difference?

Clearance, my 1st fiver cleared the back bumper by about 6", bumper never hit it!

A couple of weeks ago I heard the dreaded crunch from
an Rv'er that forgot to put his tailgate down (backed
into the 5ver pin). Maybe your owner is skeert of forgetting
to lower the tailgate for hook-up / un-hook ???

On a related note... saw at least 3 5ver's (with the crank-up
antenna) in the "up" position...as they were checking out.

I stopped notifying folks as it seems well-intentioned
intervention is rarely welcomed. Just wave.

I dont know about saving fuel, but I can tell you there is a large vacuum in the bed. I had a trolling motor in its box and put it against the tailgate. When I looked in the rear view mirror it was levitating. Thankfully I caught it before it got sucked out.

That is the main reason I got a fiver tailgate. The truck seems to handle better without that turbulence around the trailer too.
