People talk about reaction time and driver competence. I don't disagree that those are critical for accident avoidance. Unfortunately they aren't quantifiable for the masses. We tend to live in our own bubble of self congratulating confidence. I do.
That's why we have speed limits. Some drivers are better able to control their car at 80 than others are at 60.
How do we qualify competent drivers from those who aren't? We can't without invasive testing and restrictions.
So we lower the standard. The fact is that the open road isn't a solo journey. We have to account for less capable drivers doing things that put us and our vehicle in jeopardy. Everyone reading this has experienced truly awful road skills from those traveling along side us as highway speed.
Fixing that standard could mean a better inspection of vehicles and drivers ability and better enforcement for vehicles operating within their design parameters.
Right now in the US there is practically no enforceable legal standard for towing whatever one wants with whatever they feel like. TV rating don't factor, driver experience doesn't matter. For all our sake, and especially now as record number of people are hitting the roads with RV's we might think about having some legal standards.
Not for myself of course. I have excellent reaction time for my truck as well as complete anticipation of what everyone else might do. ;-)
