I agree. Mentioned the same thing about today's "1500's" vs yesterday's "2500's" in a post some time back.

The 1500's have plenty of power but lack the payload for many toy hauler hitch weights if you also load the truck up with supplies or people. Check your actual loaded tongue weight and receiver capacity - You may be in for a surprise. I went the other direction from a F250 to a 5500. The 5500 can haul a car on the deck and still have enough axle capacity to drag along the largest bumper pull toy hauler. Right now I carry 2 tons on the deck while towing 4 tons, but I have plans to be carrying a ton more in the next few years.My buggy built off a VW Bus:My previous setup:My current setup:

Diesel motors pre 2007 are pre DPF and DEF, all my 07 classic (06 motor) has is the cat and egr / pcv. I got 7.x mph towing my 40' 18k TH in Wyoming at 75, I usually get 11.x at 58 on I5 in California. Speed and hills kill mpg's. If you are getting much less then 10 with a newer diesel loaded, you are in regen, stop and go, uphill, flying low, and / or something is very wrong.

Anything before 2004 could be considered old school as these are pre DPF and DEF. Dad's old 7.3L is old school mechanical injection.....

You must have had something going on with your truck to only get that kind of mileage. My old 2012 3500 with same gearing as my 2015 3500 got 11-12 towing a 39ft #16000 toy hauler, my 2015 doesn't do much better towing but does much better empty at 20-22 on level roads. Pulling a car trailer with a 4-door wrangler I avg about 13mpg.

What state are you in?
I could barely get 12 mpg out of my cummins ram when it was unloaded
Plus I would get buried in the sand even with 4x4
My new 1500 cruises right through the stuff I got stuck in with the 2500

Yup, now if you had an old 12v Cummins you could get some mileage and power out of it
My '13 was in the shop forever, I had the dealer put a leveling kit on it and it got the death wobble, They replaced the entire front end and couldn't get rid of it. I couldn't even drive it on the freeway anymore worried I was gonna get the wobble and cause an accident.
My new 1500 came with a lifetime bumper to bumper mopar warranty :)

Yes and you can thank the EPA for light duty diesels that get 12 MPG, the fleecing of America continues.

As a diesel mechanic since 1980s I can tell you after 2004 it's been a downward spiral for diesel owners. Good diesel techs are laughing all the way to the bank. I drive a V10 :o
