tires for fiver

I own a 2004 hr savoy 29 I am pretty sure it takes 16 inch tires. my question is what is the best make of tire to use on a fifth wheel? I will be sure to get exact sizes before ordering, I was just curious which brand is the best.

Maxxis would be a really good choice for a 15" Believe it's an M8008 tire that you might be referring to...

  • Agree with JIMNLIN and Chris takes on what tires OP might think about putting on their 5er. . I had Michelin XPS RIBS on my last 5er with 6,000# axles and though pricey, are a very good tire, as are the others mentioned by Jim and Chris...I too would recommend staying away from "off the wall" named Chinese manufactured ST tires. I'm not sure that Sailun tires make an E rated tire that has been reported on here as being used in the application we're talking about, (do know about their G rated tire), but it would probably be one of the very few Chinese manufactured tires that I'd recommend to take a look at...but again, don't know if they offer a tire in E load range that we know anything about..

  • Welcome, I see that you are fairly new on the forum. Tires are an ongoing topic here. You could use the search function and read tire threads for two week straight way hours a day.

Or, you could read and follow jimnlin advice above. He has towed commercially for many years with pickups and flat bed trailers plus tows a trailer similar in size and weight as yours.

I also have a similar size trailer that had junk chinese LT tires OEM and got them off in late winter of 2004-05. I install one of the tires he talks about, the Michelin XPS RIBs. I ran those for 6.5 years and 40K+ miles, and removed them based on age, as they still had 60-65 tread left. I sold them of Craigslist for 200 bucks and installed Bridgestone Duravis R250's. These two tires are the gold standard for trailer up to 6K GAWR.

If you are going to travel the country with your new rig, then that is the best. If you are going to just travel locally and shorter distances than a poly carcass LT will be ok. However the two I have used have a much better tread pattern for trailer use. If I was going to install a poly carcass LT it would most likely be the Firestone Transforce HT, as it is a lot of tire for a really good price.

Now, you need to go measure center to center on your axles. If you have 33" or more, then get LT235/85R16E's. If less than 33" get LT245/75R16E's and make sure you have enough room for a tire that is slightly wider.

If for some reason you feel compelled to buy ST (Spercial Trailer) tires, then get Goodyear Marathons, as Goodyear will pay to fix your trailer when they fail in a year to 3 or 4.

Someone may be along to tell you that if your trailer came with ST tires that you are required to use those in the future! At that point start using the search feature and study motives! You will most likely figure it out! Or PM members like jimnlin and myself.

  • Ditto on jimnlin's post...you would be crazy to put ST tires back on....any one of the LT tires he listed would be fine. I have had Goodyear Wrangler BF Goodrich's and now Michelins. I travel cross country and average 70 mph and have never had a tire problem.
  • Best make of tire for your 29' 5th wheel trailer ?? Actually there are several very good LT tire brands for your trailer with 16" wheels and probably 5200 lb axles.

I sure wouldn't put a ST tire on a trailer that size regardless of brand.

IMO there is no best brand.
The best of the best tire type IMO for trailer use is a commercial grade all steel ply carcass such as the Bridgestone Duravis R250 or its sister tire the Duravis M895 or
the commercial grade all steel ply carcass Michelin XPS Ribs.

Other best LT tires are the Goodyear Wrangler HT or the BFG Commercial HT or the Firestone Transforce HT or the commercial rated Maxxis LT in the U-168 line. These tires are a fabric carcass/steel tread belts and are used across the trailering world including RV trailers with great success and have few if any of the ST tire type issues.
  • thanks everyone, I like michelens on my truck, I just wondered if they made good trailer tires too. load range e I know that.
  • All ST tires are rated for 65mph. I went for BFG Commercial TAs, LT tire, because it rated for 100mph. I usually only travel at 65 and like the extra margin of safety.
  • Myself and many others here like Maxxis in a trailer tire. Some also use light truck tires but I'm not convinced that's necessary.
