Towing a Car behind a 5th Wheel

What is 'most' on the internet is most people claiming something is the law and not having a clue about what they're talking about nor having ever read a single statute. The link above has all the state statutes.

OK, that's three states heard from, two that have such a law, one that apparently does not.
In order to qualify for "most states", I believe we need to hear from a total of at least 26 that DO have that restriction.
Anybody else?

Someone mentioned putting the car on a train. I never thought of that but it sounds viable as long as it's not terribly expensive. When I went from a MH to fiver 6 years ago I had to give up my Saturn. I sure wish I had it now rather than use my diesel as a daily driver. Anyone know of approximate cost to ship a car via train? I'd be tempted to buy a small car and ship it that way since I often spend 5-6 months in one place.

Towing a car behind a 5er is not legal in IL.
IL statute:
625 ILCS 5/15-107(c) Except as provided in subsections (c-1) and (c-2), combinations of vehicles may not exceed a total of 2 vehicles except the following:
(5) Recreational vehicles consisting of 3 vehicles, provided the following:
(A) The total overall dimension does not exceed 60 feet.
(B) The towing vehicle is a properly registered vehicle capable of towing another vehicle using a fifth-wheel type assembly.
(C) The second vehicle in the combination of vehicles is a recreational vehicle that is towed by a fifth-wheel assembly. This vehicle must be properly registered and must be equipped with brakes, regardless of weight.
(D) The third vehicle must be the lightest of the 3 vehicles and be a trailer or semitrailer designed or used for transporting a boat, all-terrain vehicle, personal watercraft, or motorcycle.
(E) The towed vehicles may be only for the use of the operator of the towing vehicle.
(F) All vehicles must be properly equipped with operating brakes and safety equipment required by this Code, except the additional brake requirement in subdivision (C) of this subparagraph (5).

Just because you see a commercial rig longer than 60 ft and towing other combinations does not mean you are allowed to tow different combinations with an RV. Statutes differ between commercial rigs and other combinations.

But, we certainly DID specify CALIFORNIA as a state that requires a Class A CDL with doubles endorsement for their residents who choose to tow 2 trailers.
AFAIK, it is the ONLY one that does, although certain other states require an endorsement on the regular license.
Some require no special license.

Per Minnesota statutes:
"Subd. 3c.Recreational vehicle combination.

Notwithstanding subdivision 3, a recreational vehicle combination may be operated without a permit if:

(1) the combination does not consist of more than three vehicles, and the towing rating of the full-size pickup truck or recreational truck-tractor is equal to or greater than the total weight of all vehicles being towed;

(4) the trailer is only carrying watercraft, motorcycles, motorized bicycles, off-highway motorcycles, snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles, motorized golf carts, or equestrian equipment or supplies, and meets all requirements of law."

Minnesota statutes.

Please give the actual statute from a few states that verifies this. I have only researched Montana, and I have not found any such law in MCA 61-XX-XXX.

But, we certainly DID specify CALIFORNIA as a state that requires a Class A CDL with doubles endorsement for their residents who choose to tow 2 trailers.

Any state may exceed Federal Standards if they wish.
California requires a "Doubles Endorsement" on the driver's license for any resident towing two trailers. They say the only license that can have a "Doubles Endorsement" is a Class A CDL. Therefore, if you want to tow two trailers, and you are a resident of CA, you must have a Class A CDL with Doubles Endorsement.
If any state desires to do so, they can pass a law that ALL resident drivers of ANY vehicle of ANY size must have a Class A CDL and a medical certificate "For safety on the highways and byways, and For The Good Of The Children!"

I agree that any state can up the requirements, but that does not make them any safer. You as well as I have seen so called pro's behind the wheel of big rigs at are pure idiots. But making blanket statements about requirements without reference to a specific state is giving out miss information as I see it. Oh, and I do hold a class "B" CDL and medical card for my part time job.
