One thing that always causes me pause is this idea that the truck has to be big enough to stop the 5er. That would be a good built-in safety factor but shouldn't the trailer brakes be good enough to stop the trailer? I know that might be a challenge for the electrical brakes commonly used but more and more rigs are using electric over hydraulic disk brakes and really have a greater stopping ability. Not to start the war over, but what do you think?

I tell you when I found out about truck brakes having to do the stopping was going down the Saluda grade on I26 in NC......somehow, evidently, I didn't have my cable hooked in very well and while going down this very long, steep, mountain, my cable worked it's way out of the plug in the bed of the truck....I was only going about 55 mph and I was in T/H and had the EB on, (this was actually on my 2010 Ram dually), I got slowed down, pulled over and made sure was plugged all the way in this time, BUT, I KNEW that 16,000# 5er was behind me and only thing stopping me/slowing me down was the tranny /engine in tow haul, the EB and of course my brakes.....
Though most, including myself believe the trucks brakes stop the truck and trailer brakes brake the trailer, BUT, there could be the time that, like what happened to me, happens to someone else....It's nice to know that my truck did slow down and stop that 16,000# 5er behind me...it can happen...
