Towing this with 3/4 ton

Looking for thoughts on how this would behave:
2013 F250 diesel crew cab (short bed 4x4)
pull rite slider

From Ford Spec sheet:
GVWR 10,000#
Max payload: 3240#
Max 5th wheel trailer weight 15,900

Looking at buying a 2005 Jayco Talon 36Z
The specs I have found from a Jayco spec sheet:
Dry weight: 10,500#
Dry pin weight: 2,495#
Gross weight 14,900#

I will verify these numbers with Jayco when I get VIN # from seller.
By the book this is "legal" combo. Pin weight may get high if fully loaded, but most of the weight would likely be behind the axles in the garage and not add much in terms of pin weight. I would think that with 2000# of gear in the trailer I would be approaching the limits of pin weight considering people and gear in the truck.

Thoughts from people that have done something similar?
  • Your limits on that truck are the rear suspension and tires since the axle has a higher rating. How the SRW will handle verses using a DRW truck is really the question. Do you want spend the money on upgrades only to find that you will replace the truck or RV with a better match or will you try to scale the FW closer to the truck's capability is what you need to ask yourself.
  • Without much weight in the back, your pin weight will go up, especially if the water tanks are in front of the axles and you tow with full water.
  • I do not see ever having more than a 1500# toy in the back, so I doubt I would ever get to max weight. Still seems like about all the pin weight I could handle is 2000# and not exceed specifications of the truck...
  • ^^^^^ gotta love that response. Let me guess, you have a F250 which is probably overloaded. :)
  • You will be fine but, close on the tires...You could always upgrade the tires as they are the limiting factor on your rear axle rating.
  • Forgot to say, too much trailer for a F250.
Pin weight will be over 3000 lbs when fully loaded.
My 41' Warrior has 3400lbs of pin weight when I have full water and my 2700lbs sand rail in the back.

Results are 7900# with 3/4 tank and otherwise basically empty. Does that seem reasonable? I was expecting 700-800# less....

    Totally reasonable.

    My 2012 F350 Dually weighed

with full fuel, 5er hitch and no passengers.
  • Full of fuel and family a Ford F250 can top 8000 easily. That means about 2000 pounds for hitch and pin weight. That simply translates to a fiver loaded ready to travel maxed out at about 10,000 pounds.

  • At The maximum weight that fiver will have a pin weight of about 3000 pounds. Leaving you about 200 pounds for everything above a stripped bare bones truck. Don't think it will work for you
