towing w/ hitch slid back

When I first got my 2013 extended cab GMC w/ 6 1/2 ft bed I busted the window out of my 30 ft Alpenlite. After much thought I tried leaving the hitch slid back on a couple of short trips, no problem. I am just finishing a 7000 mile trip w/ the hitch still slid back, still no problem. It handles fine. Trailer is about 11K loaded. I am not reommending this to anyone, just passing it along to let others know it is possible.

  • We posted the question of how far it is OK to drive w/ the slide pulled a couple years ago because of our steep narrow lane. We were told by most that this would be OK. We pull into the horse park a mile from the house to slide the hitch. DH says he feels the difference and would not want to tow much further with the slide pulled.
  • Get a pullrite super glide automatic sliding hitch problem solved. Yes they are expensive try Craigslist.
  • Other than having no consideration for the safety of those sharing your road, I guess it is OK. The hitches were not designed to be used that way, hence the danger. Of course you would be in front of any catastrophe, and out of danger so it's all good.
