Tim,
Glad you caught those tires before it tore up your camper. I always worry about that while running down the road.
The axle will still carry the same weight, it will now just be on the rim instead of the tire as the tire comes apart. Also were those tires rated at 80 psi? My TowMax tires were D rated and only had 65 PSI as max. I now went with 16" E rated on my lite weight 5er and they are at 80 psi.
