Toy Hauler Buyers FYI... Jayco sells to Thor

Today, July 1 2016 it was announced that Thor had acquired Jacyo RV. From what I've read the management team will remain in place, it will be interesting to see what changes take place. Jayco and it's subsidiaries were the few that still offered a 2-year warranty. Marks the end to a very large family owned business.

Thor Industries buys Middlebury-based Jayco for $576M

  • I think it's sad news. Fewer and fewer manufacturers mean less competition. Not a good thing for consumers.

JMHO. I think Jayco quality has been dropping over the last few years. That 2 year warranty causing a problem. I had a 2012 Jayco TT. Very poor workmanship. Refused to cover warranty. I dumped it.back on the market in a trade. I think recent years workmanship finally caught up with them and was hurting sales. My 2012 Jayco almost burned to the ground. Poor wiring, bad wiring connections within the walls etc. Wire connections twisted together with no insulation or positive connections. Jayco trying to save money joining wires in the walls when reaching the end of wire rolls etc. I knew in 2013 I would never buy another Jayco. I suspect as more and more customers had problems it became a major problem for them. That said, was it a supervisor trying to save Jayco money or a Jayco policy? Who knows. Their quality seemed to drop. It is a shame because they had a great name in the RV industry.

BTW. I posted a couple of years ago my problems with Jayco quality and my TT amost burning to the ground and Jayco refusing to cover under warranty. I took a lot of flack for that post. Owners saying how great Jayco quality was at the time. I'm sure now I wasn't the only unhappy customer. It just took a couple of years for it to catch up with them.
Where I store my RV the person in the next unit has a Jayco 5th wheel. Unfortunately he had lots of problems with wiring in his unit as well as poor construction. He spent weeks repairing the unit himself. When he opened up certain areas they had left out insulation. Cut wires to short that pulled lose. He made the statement he would not buy another Jayco. His is a 2012 5th wheel. At least he had the skills to repair issue himself. Kind of sad when a mfg know for being a cut above goes downhill.

I went to buy a Jayco 32 fks from a dealer about a hour away in Great Bend a while back and the trim on the outside was cut to short and they filled it in with white silicone. Same story on the inside, only the used colored wood putty that did not match. I left without buying.
  • That's what scares me when thinking about buying a used RV, when someone puts one back on the market after having issues with it. I've read other issues of RV quality problems. I guess you never know on an RV if your buying someone else's problems. Too bad there's not a RVfax report similar to carfax that a person could check on repairs or issues before buying one. Seems Thor is going to own them all before long.
