Toy Hauler or travel trailer?

Anyone bought a TH or TT and wish you would have done the opposite? Any reason in particular? Weight, room?
  • We like the toy hauler even if you aren't hauling toys. Just because the back is a "garage" most of the time we can still put a piece of carpet down and make it the living room. We like being able to be out of the wind and rain but still have the back open instead of being strictly inside or outside. We also have the ramp set up with eye bolts and straps to be a porch and can hang out there which is nice when it gets a little muddy. You can stay outside with out being in the dirt.

Even if you don't have toys the TH gives you versatility with the only downside being some extra weight.
  • Went from a TT to 5er Toy Hauler, then to a Class A. TT didn't allow us to take our toys, the TH did but wasn't ideal for non-toy trips. Frankly didn't like having 39' of TH behind my F350 - so went with a Class A. It towed our ATV trailer like it wasn't back there, tows our boat the same way and I can setup for it to tow my Jeep now.
  • Our next trailer will be a conventional fifth wheel because with the kids all grown I only haul my one dual sport and it can go on a rack on the back of the trailer. Would have to find one with a generator and large water tank though as we'll still be dry camping most of the time. The furniture and storage as well as available slide outs are so much better in a conventional trailer than a toy hauler.

We bought the toy hauler thinking we would always have toys with us, but in the last 3 years we have only put the quad in it once. Usually the quad lives in the back of the truck if it comes at all. All in all I love the TH but the majority of the time I wish I had a regular trailer, much lighter to tow with more creature comforts.

This is what I'm thinking, we'll take the 4 wheeler along every now and then. But we do favor the toy hauler for our dogs, we can leave them in a room without worrying about them getting into anything. And if they make a mess those floors are easy to clean.
I like the TH for its capabilities, I like the TT for the weigh and other features.
    Decisions, decisions

  • Only you can juggle your needs and make your own decision. Our first was a TT and the second was a TH because we got into desert off road camping with atvs and finally a utv. On a trip with two dogs to Yellowstone I would not buy another travel trailer. We put down the accessory carpet and the "wall" to hide the ramp that negated the toy hauler image. The dogs had plenty of room for their beds, food & water bowls. We had large folding table for "stuff" a person can't find space to store including a cooler, trash can, lawn chairs, etc. If camped at a place with a spectacular view the ramp can be dropped for a wide open outdoor feeling. We agreed that if we had no dogs nor toys, we'd still favor a toy hauler for travel.
I believe the THs are designed for a distributed weight with toys in the back so without them the tongue may be a bit heavy but a WD hitch should take care of that . IMO.. With our F-350 it wasn't an issue.. Have fun with your choice.. :)
  • We're pulling the trigger on ours this week and it's a TH. We spend more time in 2 wheels than 4, and we definitely would not be where we cannot carry our bike. We'll be FT'ing, and still think a Hauler is right for us. We'll check back in a year or so and reaffirm or deny our choice then!
  • We seriously considered Toy Haulers for years. When the time came TT won the Olympics! We REALLY evaluated our camping choices, and REALLY looked at what we were even considering owning a TH for in the first place. When we thought it through, we realized the TT was the right choice. Our dealer also helped us A LOT! He really sat down with us and ran us through a battery of questions, what we thought we wanted, the type of camping we do, and even the very core reason why we were wanting a trailer in the first place, what was right and wrong with our previous trailers, and then he plugged all the data into his brain and experiences and hit the nail right on the head! Absolutely no secondary regrets or disappointments with our final decision. And am still extremely happy and satisfied with our Outback.
