I just purchased a 2016 Ram 1500 Rebel with the V8 HEMI and 3.92 rear, tow package and air suspension.The side sticker says max weight is 950 lbs. Doing the calculations, that doesn't leave room for anything... I'm wondering if it was even worth get the v8 with the 3.92 and air suspension.It will typically be two of us (350#) with another 50# or so of gear (400# total) in the truck.Then there's the 100# WD hitch, so I'm left with about 450 lbs remaining for trailer tongue weight, which equates to about 4500 trailer weight.First question is - is this right, or am I missing something? I have a 21 foot shockwave that probably meets your specs. Mine is 5,200 dry, not sure on pin weight, but a properly setup half ton should pull it. However the same model as mine with generator, solar panel, etc. i see are around 6,000 dry.

The payload your referring to is a tire placard number which can change with different tire and wheel packages on some trucks. We find some 1500 Rams with a 10k lb tow rating. The 5.7 hemi 3.92 gears and the 8 speed transmission has no trouble pulling the load......but won't have the axle/tire capacity to carry a 12-25 percent hitch load from a RV TT/5th wheel trailer. Tow ratings are for all types of trailers....not just a RV. For some reason Ram uses those small 3900 RAWR on all new gen 1500 trucks. These trucks empty rear axle weights may be in the 2500 range leaving approx 1400 lbs for a payload. You sure don't want to exceed a axle/tire or wheel load limits.

Also consider that toy haulers have heavy tongues. It isn't unusual for a 5,500# TH to have over 1,000# on the tongue.

My 2015 rear weighs 2200# loaded for daily duty (cross bed toolbox with tools), sticker says 1600# payload. I suspect mine is about the max setup for the RAM 1500 5.7, 8spd, 3.92... 10,200# 'towing capacity'.. might have lost a bit with the 4x4. Our TT is very light, 2700# 550# tongue weight.. I don't worry too much about exceeding the payload however we tend to pack light. With this truck I wouldn't tow anything over 6000# on a regular basis, seems likely you'll either exceed payload or have to run the trailer with a light tongue which isn't my idea of fun.Manufactures will put a 'tow' package on anything, my 2 door wrangler has a 'towing' capacity of 3500#. No way would I put our light 16' TT behind that at any speed greater than walking speed.

That's not true. While most toy haulers are too heavy, and I personally won't tow a toy hauler with a half ton again, there are many adequate options.

I test drove a Rebel and Power Wagon a few weeks ago...
The Rebel also had ~950lb payload, wife asked what good is this truck ;) She's been learning quickly..
The Power Wagon was in the ~1400lb range.. Good for a 'small' travel trailer..
Honestly ANY loaded up Ram 1500 4x4 crew cab can't tow 'anything' legally.. Pretty much need to make the conscious decision up front that you are not going to pay any attention to the GVWR with them.. Hence the reason my last two Dodges have been 2500 & 3500's.. The last "1/2 ton" was a GMC.. (1600 lbs)
I personally think it's marketing BS to drive most customers into their HD trucks.. No reason any half ton shouldn't be fine with a 6000-8000 lb camper in tow.
