Toyota tumdra owners

I am looking for any tundra owners who have 5th wheel campers. Im not looking for or to start debates with the weight police. I am looking for experiences good or bad. Thanks
  • Thank you for your responses. The responses you posted are telling me what I already knew. Wait.... On this forum I got the answers I was looking for without getting hammered into the ground like another forum I asked same question. I am happy with my current rig bit there is always the IF I find one....I think ill wait. Thanks again. It is very easy to get caught up in the half ton towable thing....
  • For a Tundra? Scamp or Escape are the only realistic options, IMO.

They will tell you there the Tundra can tow the space shuttle :).

I have a Tundra and love the truck. I pull a TT with 900lbs tongue weight and my truck has timbrens and a good weight distribution hitch. Even though a 5er has the weight over the axle, I assume it would still be close to your payload limit. But like someone said earlier, they do make 5er that are towable with a half ton.

I love my truck, did I say that already? But, I will be looking for a one ton diesel as I don't feel safe with the TT and 3 dirt bikes in the bed. I have not towed a 5er, folks say they are easier to tow.

Test driving a 350 dually tomorrow. Overkill? Yes. But I am now on the side of "you can never have too much truck".

Why? This is a perfectly acceptable forum to ask this question.
  • Tundras have a lower payload rating than most other 1/2 tons, I believe, due to the way they're built - heavier framing under the front, to support the engine, somewhat lighter framing under the passenger compartment, and c-channel framing under the bed. That of course is where the weight of any 5th wheel goes - on the lightest-built part of the truck.

I don't think I'd recommend towing any 5th wheel with a Tundra. JMHO. Otherwise, it's a great tow vehicle.
  • THERE ARE 5TH-WHEEL TRAILERS SUITABLE FOR 1/2 TON TOW VEHICLES.

The catch is that you must be VERY aware of your vehicle's limitations which means NOT just the maximum towing rating. With 5th wheels, your limitation will almost always be the truck's cargo rating. The trailer will need a hitch weight of no more than 'about' 1200 lbs, which REALLY narrows down the list. (I owned a 25' Sportsmen with a hitch weight of 950 lb., pulled with F150.)

That's the bad news, the good news is:

THERE ARE 5TH-WHEEL TRAILERS SUITABLE FOR 1/2 TON TOW VEHICLES.

You just have to find the right one.
  • We have both a 1 ton F350 Lariat and a Toyota Tundra limited in our family. The Tundra is limited to towing a boat, enclosed trailer or a tandem utility trailer. Anything larger and I start to get uncomfortable with the weights and the truck really sags.

IMHO, it's not a good choice for pulling an average camper. as far as a 5th wheel - no way would I try that.
  • I had a 2007 5.7L Tundra and pulled a TT, not a 5th wheel. But, my experience towing with the Tundra was OK, just OK. The engine was fine but the suspension and brakes were terrible. I went through brake pads and rotors often even while using the transmission for downhills. It was just too light of a truck to really have a comfortable towing experience. Yes, you can do it, but it will be hard on the truck. After I switched to a one ton diesel I learned to enjoy towing now! If possible, do yourself a favor and think about upgrading to a truck that will allow you to enjoy the towing. You also will not be limited on trailer, if you decide later to go bigger (which many people do)
  • I pull a 2006 Komfort 222FS with a 5.6L 2014 Tundra SR5. No bad experiences I can think of. Had a suspension shop add higher leaf spring stacks to raise trailer and better level ride with rather tall Tundra.
