TrailAir long/short?

My unit came with a long TrailAir hitch and I have a long bed truck. It sure doesn't need to be that long and It would save me a foot in length if I installed a short one. Does anyone know how much difference in weight transfer to the bed of the truck it makes between the long and short? I think I may want to trade my long hitch for a shorter one if it works out OK.

  • After thinking it over and reading the replies I am going to keep the long box. Someone pointed out on another forum that access to the truck box is a lot easier. Thats a big consideration as I carry an extra water tank and blueboy. It is a lot easier getting between the truck and the trailer when doing my "chores" compared to the prior trailer. Thanks for the input.

I have a short Trailair on ours.3600# pin.The biggest disadvange is tailgate will not clear trailer when down and cannot open front compartment on trailer when connected.I have a fifth wheel tailgate so hooking up is not a problem.Avantage is less stress,I think,on trailer frame.

Hmmm, mine clears both the tailgate and compartment door easily while connected. Do you have a short bed?

Long bed truck.I think there is 9" difference in pin distance from trailer. Can walk between when hooked up but compartment door hits bumper and tailgate is too close if down.

"STRESS" on the trailer frame is a biggie...

  • It is nice to be hitched and be able to walk between the tailgate and the RV with it down. You won't find a better air ride pin box!

    Leave it alone and enjoy!
  • I just added a trail air and haven't yet had the chance to use it. The pin is about 6" longer then the oem pin box. I'm excited to get the extra length as my truck tailgate has a lip on it that prevents me from opening the storage door on the front of the trailer when it is hooked up.
  • I can't imagine it would make a huge amount of difference. I use a short one with a long bed and about 2200 pin weight, and have no problems. But then, I have no personal comparison either. Fwiw!
