Well we have started our trip to the west coast from Florida and it has been an adventure. Left Jax, go to Marianna fl had a bearing go out then another in Slidell, La. Had all bearings repacked in Marianna, Fl but stuff happens. Pulling 39ft 2007 Keystone Raptor Mod RP3712 with 2007 Duramax GMC 3500 HD Long wheel base 4x4. Now just south of Amarillo Tx and I am getting a code on the dash of truck that says Service Trailer Brake System. Also shows Trailer gain setting of 5.0 and then Output ------. Output should show a number? and if not shows pickup does not recognize trailer brakes? The display on truck now shows the ABS warning lite. Not sure what to make of all this, was wondering if others have had similar messages and how you handled. We are heading into Amarillo, TX to Hawkins Trailer repair for them to look at. Not sure if they can address truck ABS lite issue. We are headed to Chico, Ca to see kids and grandbabies. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Inspect, replace, service bearings and tires while at home. Go through every wire on the rig and clean, solder, seal all connectors while at home. Replace or tweek the terminal tension on all the connectors in the 7 way. The chain is only as strong as the weakest link.

Took hauler in before trip for inspection and stuff. Service folks said all that was needed was add grease, which they did and off we went. Took truck to GMC dealer for service before we left. So far tires have been good. Amen on pre flight check. Not sure what I could have done except remove drums myself and inspect which I at this point should have done. Thanks

The trailer brake issue has nothing to do with the bearings. More likely than not, the wire that crosses through the inside of the axle has rubbed through and is intermittently shorting.BTW, the service people are idiots. Adding grease is not servicing the bearings. I would never go back there.

I agree on brake and grease deal. Like I said should have took drums off myself and looked. Amen on never going back. Thanks for the response.

Stude55Dog from my experience with our Toy Hauler and Class; about the only thing you can do to really impact your MPG is to slow down. I can notice the difference between going 60 and 65. Gotta pay to play ;)

Also wanted to add that pulling this 39' Keystone toyhauler in wsw winds does eat the diesel. Averaging less than 9 miles per gallon on a good day. Learning best way to drive climbing all these elevations out here. Used cruise at first but not now. Still not sure if doing best way but learning. Truck is a GMC 3500 Duramax DRW, HD, Long Bed. Got all issues with trailer brake corrected and also truck had faulty EBCM unit. Costly repairs but all is well. We are in Flagstaff in Cinders State Park, rode sxs yesterday, way to much fine dust for my blood, all trails are whop de do's, not a comfortable ride. We are leaving here this am and heading to Kingman to ride Hualapai Mn ohv trail. Anyone rode there before? Then on to Chico, Cal to spend Thanksgiving with kids. Wanted to go to Las Vegas but SEMA show is over. May ride Mojave Jawbone canyon on way to Chico. Thanks

Was thinking the same thing. Just temp. wire it until you get somewhere you can take it to someone you trust.

I have an old analog unit sitting on the garage shelf, "just in case" i or someone else needs one, it's not worth much money but would work in a pinch. I found one in 10 seconds on Amazon for $50.00. Walmart for under $30.00.

I will put in an after market controller if this last ebmc does not fix truck communication issue to trailer. Got to get the ABS lite off dash also. Tommorrow at 9 am we will see what happens. Thanks

If the trailer side has a clean bill of health, why not drop in an after market brake controller to finish the journey?

Update, Monday Oct 30. Have been in Amarillo, Tx since thrus, the local GM dealer has been unable to accurately diagnose the issue with the truck trailer brake recognition issue. The trailer brake system has been ok'd. Local GM dealer has replaced front wheel sensor twice, once with aftermarket part, then GM part but does not fix problem. We are waiting now on a part, brake control electronic module, to come from GM whse in Dallas, due tues am and this will fix? Not a fun experience so far. Lots of money spent. There has to be a way these GM vehicles can more accurately diagnosed.
