Trailer Wiring - Added Side Turn Signals

I installed a set of LED turn signals on each side of the trailer, so that when a car is driving alongside, and I wish to change lanes, they can see the signal.
The output from the truck (2012 Dodge Ram 2500 HD Diesel) provides a turn/stop signal to each of the left and right rear lights on the trailer.
I spliced into the stop/turn wires for each side, but my problem is that when I brake, the lights I added also come on. Is there a way to install a device that will only activate the added turn signals if power is NOT being sent to both lights (left and right) by the brakes?
  • I did the same thing a few years ago, but not with LEDs. I just tied into the wiring close to where the battery is on mine and they do light when I use the brakes. I don't mind that because then I know the brake lights are working!
  • I've thought about doing something similar, BUT since a majority of other drivers ignore your turn signals anyway (other than to speed up to fill the gap you're trying to merge into) it would be a wasted effort.
  • I ran the wiring in wire loom, from the rear tail lights, to the side of the trailer, secured to the frame.
  • I think that is a great idea. How did you run the wire, did you go under the tr. does the wire show at all. I don't think you would be able to run the wire in the walls of the tr. I would like to do it myself but not sure how to run the wires.
  • You need the little splitter box that separates the stop and turn portion of the bulbs. I wired a Dodge before for towing and had to use the splitter box. Newer vehicles have the European style lights and they have to be split.
