I've gone TT to 5th wheel with two different truck/trailer combinations (in both cases the 5th was heavier by a few thousand pounds). Even with the added weight the difference was hard to see. As best I could tell it's around 1 mpg which I chalk up to the added weight.
Of all the pros/cons of the whole TT/5th wheel debate fuel mileage never makes my radar. It's just not enough of a difference to worry about. Maybe if you were hauling them across country and were trying to fill numbers on a profit/loss sheet but for recreational use where you're already dropping stupid amounts of money I just can't see it making that much of a difference. Speed and wind are going to be MUCH larger determinants.
