Travelling with heat on

Hi again
We are just about ready to leave Maine for Florida for a month. First time we have taken the 5th wheel down. Temps here are still in the teens. I am wondering if I can set the thermostat to 40 in the rig while we are travelling so that all our liquids (food, cosmetic stuff, etc don't freeze before we can get further down south. Does anyone do this? Pros and Cons? Thanks.
  • You need to check all of the state regulations about traveling with open valve propane tanks! I believe most states prohibit that!

Personally, I have never run with the furnace on. I expect the low pressure area on the side of the camper rig, could cause excessive draw, either blowing out the flame, or potentially damaging the side of the trailer from excessive heat. Worse yet, creating a propane leak which would cause a catastrophic explosion!

When we set up for an overnight stop in cold weather, I leave the slides closed and start the furnace. Helps even more if your camper has an electric fireplace! We then go out for supper. By the time we get back, the camper is toasty warm. Oh yeah, don't forget to turn the covers down on the bed , so they warm up as well! Also, don't de-winterize until you are at least in the Carolina's.

    THIS....is very important.
Don't de-winterize until you get well below the freeze line.....which is a bit below the northern border of Florida right now.
It's not likely to stay that far south much longer though.

Boy different thoughts on the system.
Went getting replacement hoses mentioned to the LP technician about leaving on or turning off, as I have lived in an all gas house several times, felt keeping valves pressurized was better, he agreed.
I will say we use our 5er about once a month. I also don't spend the time to get air out of the lines.

We have just started this for our winter camping trips. We set the t-stat at about 50 to 55, so when we arrive the 5er is already warm, then reset to 65. Seems so much better.
  • I think this is doable. Things to consider, be sure that registers are not blocked by slides, chairs, gear, etc. The FW moving at speed will draw more heat out, than when parked, so could use a little more propane (not a big deal).

Have a good trip, drive safe!

  • I asked the same question a couple weeks ago. Don't recall anyone saying they had a bad experience using the heat other then folks not liking burning the fuel. I'm going to give it a try with the heat on when we head out next weekend. I'll probably see if it'll set at 50-55.
