Tripod on 5th wheel

I was wondering if those of you that use a tripod on the 5th wheel hitch to steady the camper what you think of them, does it work, is it worth the cost?

Thanks.

I've used the same bi-pod pin stabilizer on all three of our 5th wheel trailers since the early '80s. This takes care of side to side movement at the front of the trailer.
Now common sense tells most folk the back of the trailer needs some thing else. My BAL telescoping stabilizer eliminates side to side back there.
And of course fore and aft movement is taken care of by my adjustable chocks. I'm rock solid.

X2 Have the same bi pod stabilizer and rear BAL stabilizers and with chocks we are pretty solid also.
  • I used to use a tripod, then I remade it into a bipod, and that worked much better. A couple of years ago I made and installed something similar to the JT Strongarms, and it works so good I don't carry the bipod anymore. I made something similar to the Waynes Stabilizer for the rear, mounted side to side. Our 5er doesn't move when I set it up properly, even in 50+ mph winds.
  • I have a tripod. I only use it when parking for an extended stay. It's a pain to haul out and set up for a night or two.

I agree, now with the JT Strong arms installed I will likely retire it! The Strong Arms are easy to setup, and are rock solid.

After installing the strong arms, I wanted to retire the tripod. My DW thinks the tripod still makes a difference. We still utilize the tripod during extended stays. Happy wife.... you know the rest.
  • If one uses the tripod in conjunction with the stabilizers you can do a pretty good job of eliminating some heavy movement. It takes some experimenting to get enough force on the pin but it does work pretty good. Not as good as the after market products others here have used and promote but not bad if you take your time to lock it down.
  • I use mine when staying 2 or 3+ nights. Yes it helps. Complete stability, no.
I do not have the Strong Arms but I think I would get those instead now with hindsight.
  • I also only use mine when staying longer than a weekend trip. It seems to help a fair amount on our rig....but it is a pain to break it out from the basement, which is why it only gets used on extended stays.
