This is always a confusing issue. Your axles are not sized to your GVWR, your GVWR is based on the axle. If you had 6K axles, regardless of what the trailer really weighed, you would have a GVWR that was 1,600 lbs higher and a cargo capacity of 1,600 lbs more. It's all relative.
As an example, My trailer comes with 7K axles as standard, but also can come with 8K axles as an option. We went with the 8K axles, so our GVWR is highter than the identical trailer with the 7K axles. GVWR is just a calculation of the available capacity of the tires or axles (whichever is less) and the anticipated pin weight combined. Cargo Capacity is just GVW minus actual weight. Just because you have an 1,800 lb cargo capacity doesn't mean you can't overload the axles if you put all of the 1,800 lbs directly on the axles.
